5 Study Tips That Actually Work for Engineering Students

5 Study Tips That Actually Work

Engineering school can be tough, and studying efficiently is the key to success. These 5 study tips have helped countless engineering students improve focus, retain more information, and get better results — without burning out.

Tip 1: Study Actively, Not Passively

  • Don’t just reread notes or watch videos- most of the time you are zoning out anyway.
  • Solve PRACTICE PROBLEMS, explain concepts out loud, quiz yourself.
  • For memorization, use apps or websites like Quizlet or Anki- I recently bought Quizlet premium and it is a game changer for making practice tests and summarizing your notes.
  • Why this tip works: Active recall strengthens memory and understanding.

Tip 2: Use Short, Focused Study Sessions

  • Study in 25–45 minute blocks with short breaks- I personally lose deep focus after around 45 minutes.
  • Remove distractions and focus on one task at a time!! Using apps like focus tree or opal are super helpful for keeping me off my phone!
  • Set a 25-minute timer with apps or use a planner to break your study sessions into focused intervals.
  • Why this tip works: Short bursts increase focus and prevent mental fatigue.

Tip 3: Write Things Out

  • Handwrite formulas, diagrams, and notes.
  • Handwriting notes in a notebook can help reinforce learning and improve retention, the notebook I use is linked below
  • Keep a “mistake log” for tricky problems.

Tip 4: Review Material Multiple Times

  • Space out your study sessions over days instead of cramming. (if you can! This part is tricky for me too!)
  • Quick recaps before starting new topics help retention.

Tip 5: Study With a Clear Goal

  • Start each session with a question or problem to solve. “Mindlessly studying” doesn’t do anyone any good.
  • Check if you met the goal at the end.
  • Why this tip works: Goal-oriented study keeps you efficient and motivated.

Implementing these 5 tips can make studying less stressful and more productive. Start small, pick one or two tips to apply today, and gradually build better study habits that last throughout your degree!
